Scholarship Information
About Our Scholarship Program:
The Potomac Valley Architecture Foundation provides $2,400 in scholarships each year to needy and worthy students at the University of Maryland School of Architecture, and these grants are matched (starting in 2006) by another $4,000 from the American Institute of Architects and the American Architectural Foundation. In May of each year, six (6) recipients each year are selected by the scholarship committee at the school, based on need and academic achievements. Two receive $1,200, and four receive $1,000, toward their following years tuition bill.

Where the Money Comes From:
Our Scholarship fund was started in 1995, and was originally funded by an unencumbered bequest left by the estate of former member Bernard M. Frishman, AIA. Since that time, our fund has grown to over $11,000, primarily through money raised through an annual Golf Tournament, co-sponsored with the AIA Potomac Valley Chapter, and through donations from AIAPV chapter members and others concerned about the availability of future qualified members of the architecture profession.

Starting in 2007, our scholarship program was awarded "matching grants" for four $1,000 scholarships, from the American Institute of Architects and the American Architectural Foundation. In 2008, we named our two $1,200 scholarships in honor of two deceased members of AIA-PV: Bernard M. Frishman, AIA and Andrews R. Winters, AIA.

Andrew R. Winters, AIA Memorial Scholarship
We are attempting to fully endow the Andrew R. Winters, AIA Memorial Scholarship by building a separate scholarship fund in the amount of $50,000, so that scholarship may be presented in perpetuity, in Andy's name. For a donation form to donate to this fund, please click here.
